Let’s review our Christmas Party Circus Entertainment.
But first; Happy New Year everyone! 2015 was fun!
December; always a busy month for events with celebrations and New Year’s parties galore.
This year Bigtopmania were extremely busy providing circus tents and circus theme event for christmas and seasonal events across London, Surrey, Cornwall and West Sussex.
Wapping Christmas Fair.
We started our December Christmas run back again in city centre London at an event in central Wapping organised by Community Solutions with local volunteer and Church help. Entirely focused on brining the community together, with charity stalls, Father Xmas, and lots more. The sun shone and this second Fair there was a great success. Wapping Christmas Fair, Community Solutions Blog post.
From Wapping, we had a mad week with large tents and shows in Godalming and Camberley in Surrey as well as a fairy lights installation in Launceston in Cornwall and some fire juggling shows at Chanukah events in Finchley and Golders Green London for Tzivos Hashem groups.
Giant Menora Lighting Golders Green
The huge crowd at this outdoor celebration. Fire Juggling stage show and more by PeteZa.
Peteza also performed once again for a playgroup party in Chilworth, Guildford; back for about the 15th time to the 3 and 4 year olds with lots of clowning nonsense!
Fairy Lights for Launceston Young Farmers Snow Ball at Launceston Town Hall.
During the mid week we installed tents for the weekend parties to come, but also managed to install a very pretty fairy light installation for the young farmers ball. ( They stayed in place for the mayors community dinner too). It was an interesting challenge doing this and used adapted parts, lots of ladder work and hundreds of meters of lights. Looked lovely!
Company Christmas Family Party
We were working as part of a larger project co-ordinated by Michael Charles from Julia Charles Events Management. Various suppliers came together to provide fairground rides, an ice rink and santa’s grotto with Bigtopmania providing the Christmas circus party entertainment in our beautiful little Big Top.
The team came together to supply a bespoke big top experience to wow the S C Johnson Ltd employees and families of the company.
The show featured;
Chief Peteza in ringmaster & clown mode with knife throwing frolics.
Moses Opiyo was hitting new heights with his hardstands, and braving the cold in just his gold leggings.
Lucas Jet; Sky High Unicycling and juggler. Also debuting a club passing routine with Moses.
Elanor Smith ; Aerialist from Pass Go Juggling; Rounding things on aerial silks to bring the house down.
We performed two shows and in-between shows we presented circus skills and giant bubbles to keep the kids amused entertaining around 500 people across the two audiences.
This day was a good example of how we can fit into a larger scale event but provide a low maintenance one stop solution. You don’t need to worry.. we will get on and do it! We provide lighting, p.a, the show, tiered seating, carpet, space heater.
Fitzpatrick Referrals (or Supervet); the mega Staff Christmas Party Circus .
You will have to wait!
There will be a separate post about our Fitzpatrick Referrals ( the ‘Supervet’) staff christmas party circus because so much of our resources went into it that it warrants a full article itself.
So as if you needed an incentive to check back next week, well, you now have one.
Cmed Staff Christmas Party Circus.
Cmed’s West Sussex office party was a relaxed lunchtime gathering in one of our tents at their location near Horsham.
The brief organised in conjunction with one of their head members of staff ( thank you for trusting us Georgina!) was a few hours of circus, food, informal, team building, party!
With 80 staff, we installed a small tent so there was no room to hide!
Guests/ Staff were greeted by bubbles and artists and each had a red nose and some costume accessories to wear on top of the Christmas jumpers.
Lunch from Monster Foods was very popular and the candy floss was splendid!
Show was by;
Moses Opiyo; hand-balancing and hat juggling.
Lucas Jet; Unicycling and juggling,
Elanor Smith on Aerial Hoop with our new mini portable trapeze rig.
Planning; a company fun day, a brand awareness event, a staff party or a motivational team-building event?
Booking: circus acts, hands-on activities, theme decor or circus tents?
Supplying; Bigtopmania have all the in-house skills and equipment to provide an amazing circus experience for your employees, clients or for brand promotional activity.
Here we describe a recent event and have posted some fabulous images from Red Chilli Photography, taken in Sept 2015, at Bovey Castle in Devon for one of their client companies , illustrating a sample of what we can do for you.
Working with Catherine, the venue event manager, our event brief was to provide a few hours of light hearted ice breaking entertainment. We tailored our input to the given budget and the venue provided extra catering and a few small activities on top. The guests were on an overnight stay with dinner dance, networking and more.
On this occasion, apart from the beautiful castle, hotel and golf course location, we focused our part of the day on a tent we call “Dorothy”, one of our circus tents suitable for aerial acts.
(Note: we have an extensive range of circus tents for hire and on other occasions, with a big top as the main venue, smaller marquees can be linked to create a tent village with an exciting atmosphere to keep your guests engaged.)
Event Brief format;
meet and greet guests.
have a mini circus parade to the activity location,
provide a show
then hands on activity,
fuelled by circus theme snacks and drinks.
No pressure to join in or try things but with a big range of activities on hand to try from plate spinning to knife throwing; they did!
Meet and Greet Acts;
Kris on CYR WHEEL,
Els on STILT-WALKING,
Polly on HULA HOOPING,
(Ring mastering was done by client team leaders!)
Circus Show Team;
Elanor on juggling and aerial silks to provide some circus wow.
Polly; providing a funky hula hoop performance as well as invaluable circus workshop experience after the show.
Audience; Volunteers for trapeze act and knife throwers assistant!
All of this was masterminded and ring-mastered by Peteza with a crowd thrilling knife throwing act and plenty of perfect audience participation to give the employees plenty of good memories to take back to the office.
Hands On Activities / Circus-skills;
guests could indulge in after the show:
tightrope and slack-line
unicycling and wobbly wheels
trapeze and aerial hoop
target knife throwing

The dates for your diary are Good Friday 3rd April to Easter Monday 6th April (2015).
And the whole of the Easter school holidays!
Wellington Country Park is a fabulous outdoor play centre just outside Reading, Berkshire, Uk on the way to Basingstoke. It is a huge family attraction centre, regularly getting outstanding reviews and is full of children’s play activities, mixed with country park, lakes, deer park, walks, camping and more. Not forgetting the ride on train and dinosaurs!
Each year there’s something new, though not sure what till we get there!
We have a long history of working at the park, performing in various guises, taking our mobile play activities, inflatables and crazy bikes, supplying entertainers and installing our tents as outdoor venues for shows and activities.
Over the Easter holidays we supply an exciting programme through the weekends and midweek.
hands on go mad on the crazy bikes days (8-9 April),
have a go at circus skills workshops (15-16 April ), including having a go on trapeze.
But there is also a weekend (11-12 April) of magic shows by Magician David Crofts, who is also an ace Windsor based balloon twister.
Top that off with a weekend (18-19 April) of clown shows by Reading’s finest Bigfoot the Clown.
And there’s s an Easter egg hunt of course and a massive tent packed full of hands on Easter Craft activities.
So much to do!
Lets talk Baby Big Top Circus!
Roll up Roll up, Ladies and Gentlemen… But particularly the children.. Boys and girls .. welcome to the show!
Since 2009 we have presented the Baby Big Top Circus Show over the Easter long weekend.
There will be 3 shows each day at 11am, 1 pm and 3 pm. It’s always busy and lots of fun. Get your coffees and seats early! The show is targeted at young children and families has appropriate comedy and skills. It can get noisy in the tent!
We present a family orientated show … Very family ! As well as guest acts, the core team is the Bigtopmania family Husband & Wife, Son & Daughter, partners and friends!
You may even get to see a couple of pets(!) .. well Big Bear and the Easter Bunny!
You may even get some pop corn or chocolates!
You are likely to see’ clowning, acrobatics, juggling, china plate spinning, aerial trapeze and silks, limbo, Knife throwing, cowboy roping, ball spinning, balloons, unicycling, bowl spinning, hula hooping and more. NB; as ever, show content is subject to change!
Here we are not talking about plastic spinning plates but real China!
He is one of the few UK performing plate spinners and together we can have a smashing time!
I only want to quickly talk about the act itself and move on to last weeks (end Feb 2015) plate spinning work at Edinburgh University.
Oftentimes it’s performed as a comedy plate spinning act involving lots of clowning; other times it may be a typical circus variety type presentation.
Circus Variety Plate Spinning Act.
You know the one… sequined circus artist rushing backwards and forwards placing and spinning the plates on tall sticks aligned in a row, tweaking and speeding up the wobbly plates before they stop spinning and fall.
Comedy China Plate Spinning.
I prefer the clowning route as you can add more comedy with falling plates, far too tall sticks, bendy sticks, breaking sticks, and odd this like paper plates, juggling plates, plate manipulation tricks and a much much more. Laughs and skills combined.
Team-Building and Corporate Analogies with Plate Spinning.
As a real china plate spinner, I have presented real China plate spinning acts for many different scenarios from pure circus entertainment in circus tents, parties, shows, Greek nights, Butlins etc to corporate presentations with the typical analogy of “how on Earth do you keep doing so many different tasks at the same time?”… Keeping all the plates spinning. Here’s a business Leadership Analogy I have found on the web.
I have used plate spinning in training sessions, team building, exhibition stands, I have taught Microsoft graduate trainees, used plate spinning in training video for Arriva Buses; Over the years so many different places.
There is more information and photographs of PeteZa’s various spinning plates scenarios and how to book a plate spinning act here.
I thought I’d done it all.
Till last week!
The Multi-Temporal Experience of Plate Spinning.
That was one topic in a great lecture entitled “The Random Lift and Other Algorithmic Stories”.
To be honest.. I’m still not sure what it means but I had great fun doing it!
Say that again?… China plate spinning during a university professors inaugural lecture!… Interesting!
Not knowing what it would involve, of course I said yes, flew up there, had a few days in Edinburgh and got on with it. (Thank you Flybe for allowing my plate spinning equipment on board, dismantled into a ski bag!)
Chris had previously done a lecture in Paris in 1999 accompanied by a performer with plastic plates….. Pah!
This time he wanted to up the ante and add to the drama and confusion.
The point was it would be difficult for me, the audience and himself to concentrate and achieve, just like real life. It would use multiple levels of brain activity.
Judging by the other topics in his lecture about connections, spacial concepts, random floor buttons in a lift, Internet and web algorithms, I think there was another very clever algorithm involved.
I didn’t hear much during the lecture as I was concentrating on performing, filming, taking photos, doing weird things, all in a far more random, arty way than normal. Very much conceptual and non-circus but also ending in all the plates being spun, coinciding with the end of his lecture. I think it worked very well and added to the dramatics of a very interesting and quirky lecture.
For posterity it’s now on the Edinburgh University Inaugural Lectures website and YouTube video database.
Edited Plate spinning section of Video to come! Or watch it in full here and learn something! ( plate spinning approx 35 mins into it from memory!)
So, if you have any normal or random requests for a plate spinner for your event or for real China plate spinning, or with plastic, or a combination give me a call!
Half term circus fun with PeteZa and Lucas Jet at Dingles!
The February school’s half term saw the Dingles Heritage Fairground experimenting with opening at this time of year for the first time. Roaring success!
Dingles is an indoor attraction in Devon, managed by the Fairground Heritage Trust. It is a collection of national importance restoring, maintaining and presenting fairground memoirs and we are lucky enough to have it right on our doorstep. If in the area it really is worth a visit.
The attraction has lots of museum type exhibits dedicated to fairground history, circus and steam, living vehicles, transport, rides, stalls, artworks, amusement machines, and a huge indoor fairground with beautiful rides and stalls you can go on. Yes it’s a trip down memory lane but also has lots of appeal to youngsters. Prepare to ride!
During this half term week we were asked to provide extra circus skills and entertainment.
For the Valentine’s weekend, PeteZa came in all fired up to celebrate the occasion… Hence the dress style! Mr Lover Lover!
As well as some circus skills to have a go with, random mini-shows and pop-up entertainments, he provided a huge range of crazy balloon sculptures obviously with an excess of heart shapes and pink balloons for valentines.
Once the weekend valentines theme was out-of-the-way, the fun continued every day with more balloon twisting, (kiddie life-size alien puppets being very popular) and entertainment.
An alien! completely unlike anything seen on earth. And some balloon models!
Midweek we switched over and UK Juggler, Lucas Jet carried on the circus fun with tricks, uni-cycling, giant bubbles, bike stunt peg rides and his space age NineBot (sadly no photos, but you can see a short video here
Lucas didn’t take many photos but here is a nice tweet from one happy customer
Thanks @LucasJetJuggler for the entertainment today, my little buddy Isabella had a fab time.
